Facebook Custom Like Button

I would like to replace the default text/image of Facebook's "Like" code, but I need it to keep the same functionality (i.e. being able to like the page on a third-party site with a single click).

Is this possible, and if so, how would I implement that solution?

Actually you can legally change the like button as long as you don't disguise it as something else, as confirmed by this forum post. However how to do it is a bit more tricky. Here's an example on how change it (the iframe version doesn't work on i.e.):
