Sharepoint 2013 forms based authentication

I have deployed SharePoint server 2013 and have configured forms based authentication for non domain users.

This is working correctly for anyone on our local network, but when a user tries to login from the internet, they can't get logged in. They get the forms login page and get to enter their credentials, but no matter if they pick windows authentication with a domain account or forms based authentication with a user set up in that DB, they just get returned to the login page again.

Any thoughts on how to get the forms based authentication working for users not on our network and secondly, how I can secure the authentication with SSL?

OK, I discovered the solution last night. Two parts.

First, I forgot to set up the access mapping for the external address.

Second, The user set up for that sat as admin did not have fully all the the required access in SQL.

I found both errors in the SharePoint Server event logs. After fixing both of those, it is working correctly.

Had not tried looking at the event logs for errors on the SharePoint server before posting question for help.
