Network Monitor tools

Hello,

Any free tools (or well priced ones) which will allow me to effectively take samples of my internal network traffic to ensure it is running efficiently?

Depending on what you want to see.
A really good tool for within your network is Intermapper (http://www.intermapper.com)

The core tool to use for traffic mapping is wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org/). There is documentation to get you up and running fairly quickly. The software is pretty complex.

To my knowledge, SpiceWorks will only monitor network bandwidth.

WE had been looking for a tool for a while that would show health and bandwidth of our all our infrastructure.   We recently started using PRTG, a German product.  It has taken some time to tweak all the sensors but it is great.  It runs wmi for windows boxes, netflow, sflow, and jflow for detailed traffic analysis of networking gear, snmp for vmware, netapp, and general net bw, etc.
It is priced by sensor or can be purchased for unlimited use.  The trial is fully functional and is worth the few minutes that it takes to configure.  Hope this helps.
