Sharepoint 2010 Connecting an external list

I created an External Content Type in Sharepoint designer 2010 to a sql table. But when I try to access it through and external list in Sharepoint 2010. I get the following error.

Unable to display this Web Part. To troubleshoot the problem, open this Web page in a Microsoft SharePoint Foundation-compatible HTML editor such as Microsoft SharePoint Designer. If the problem persists, contact your Web server administrator.

how you created the external content type does it have the read methods to render the content  in the external list.

Make sure you followed this way

Hi,
can you verify the ULS log and attach the details of the error (using the correlation id)?

To view the ULS Log there is a nice utility:

go to your central admin and check for service application.

Select the bcs service application from the ribbon click on manage.

then it should list the lists of external content types in the current farm.

now click on the menu of the external content type and click on set permission.
Check if there, authenticated users has permission of execute on this content type or not.

if not provide them the permission to execute.
now try again.
another thing is try opening your external content type in SharePoint designer does it shows some records or not.

I figured out that the list I was trying to bring over was over 2000 items. Once I added a filter the list work perfectly.
