New NET Dev Workstation Setup: Is Web Platform Installer Neccessary?

I'm curious about the Web Platform Installer 4.0. I subscribe to MSDN and I generally install SQL 2012 standard full version, VS2010, VS2012, etc...

Now I have notice some project downloads from PluralSight, Code Project, etc... have a problem opening because they are build on dev pcs with Web platform installer. I know this because I downloaded it and the web projects opend fine.

Q. Do you think I will have any unforseen issues installing my MSDN stuff (described above) and the Web Platform Installer 4.0 on the same dev pc?

I don't want to mess-up my newly installed SSD, clean Windows 7 install either. Help!

Web Platform Installer is an Optional Software on your dev PC.

WPI is used to download some projects from the Microsoft Sites.
Advantage of WPI is you can download Web Servers, Tools, Databases etc directly.

Some time it acts as a Installer for a Projects as well where it will create IIS Directory and other necessary setups.

So far I know it will not mess up your Dev Setup but will enhance experience.

I downloaded WPI today and noticed it allows choosing specific tools, apps, etc... for install.

Q.  Windows 7 has default IIS6, so installing IIS7 & 8 with WPI sounds ok?

I'm surprised that WPI doesn't have SQL Express 2012 install.

Hi Pointeman,
WPI is used to install required components on the System.

So you can definitely go and install the IIS7 & IIS8.

I am not aware about SQL express 2012 available or not in WPI. If it is not available then it will be soon.
