Sharepoint prompting to "open or save this file" instead of check out and edit

I have a user that is trying to use Sharepoint to edit a file (MS Word and Excel).  Instead of IE8 prompting him with the normal option to check out and edit, it asks him whether he wants to open or save this file.  He says that this began happening recently.  I myself can open the file normally using the edit option.  It appears that when he tries to open the word file that it tries to open it as html.  I am guessing that something changed on the IE side but am unable to find a particular setting.  I was thinking of having the user restore the browser to its default settings but wanted to check here first.  Any ideas?

Sometimes that will happen when using the 64 bit version of the browser.
