Looking for an applied book of Java projects

Hi,

I am looking for suggestions on nice java book(s) which have solved projects with complete explanation about how the classes were chosen, why particular interfaces were built, why a particular data structure is chosen, encapsulation ideas, access controls via packages.

I just want to see a holistic view on java application programming

The Head First series books are good at that sort of thing.  You're unlikely to find a book which works through a real world application, because it would be too long and too specific, but the Head First books do a pretty good job of combining programming explanation with application design discussions.  Head First Java by Sierra and Bates is a good one.

The best Java programming book I've read is expensive but very good:  Introduction to Java Programming by Y. Daniel Liang.
