Issue while passing special character in ajax load function to controller in codeigniter

i have a issue while passing a parameter in load function using ajax. i am using a codeigniter, in view i have to send values through ajax load function parameters to controller.

    $("#content").load('slideshow/'+page+'/'+category)
 
my issue is both the arguments page and category accepts only alphanumeric character. it did not accept any special character including space.
