I have a quickbooks backup db.  I want to do a multi-user install with the DB on a server and then being able to install the app on two PCs.  I have the licensing to do this.  Can someone give me a quick set of steps on the procedure?  I don't need next next etc I just need the important pieces.  I started out with installing the server piece on the server but what now?

Here are the basic steps:

First QB User

1. Pick the user/computer of the person who will be the QuickBooks Administrator.
2. Install QuickBooks on this computer. Use the install option that is only for one user (that is, NOT hosting the file). Update QuickBooks (there are updates)
3. Copy the backup file to a temporary folder on this computer (C:\temp).
4. Open QuickBooks and then use the Center Window box to Open or Restore a file.
5. Restore your backup to the local machine and update the file (You will probably need to update the file).
6. Check that this single installation is working and the Company file is good.
7. Close the Company file so no file is open.

Server

1. Find a location in the main server partition (C:\ somewhere) and make a folder for the Company Ledger.
2. Copy the .QBW and .TLG files from the computer above to the server in the folder we just created above.
3. Install the QB Server Manager. This is the last option on the CD and the one that says "not installing QB no license needed"
4. Open the Server Manager and scan for the ledger.
5. If all went well, you can close the server manager.

Multi User

1. Go back to the first PC and map the folder on the server using NET USE Z: \\server\folder or a Server script. Do not just browse.
2. Open QB and use the Center Window to Open a Company File. Navigate to the server and open the file. It should open properly.
3. In QB, File, Use Mutli User Mode (this is different than Host Company File)

Next PC.

1. Install QB, Update it, Map the folder, Open the file.

This is a very standard approach and should work fine.

I was just able to complete these steps yesterday and they worked great.  I am going to add a couple things just in case the next person has no IT experience.

Server section additional information:

1. The folder you create will be shared so the users can map a drive to it to access the files.

4&5. I was waiting for some sort of confirmation but when you hit scan after selecting the folder that's all you need to do.   You can select the next tab and the server will be running at that point.  Once you finish the Multi User section you can come back and verify people are connecting.

Multi User section additional information:

1. Go back to the first PC and map the folder/share on the server using NET USE Z: \\server\folder or a Server script. Do not just browse to the folder by using \\server\folder.
