You will have to go to the hosting company to see what they require and When they require it.  Many offer authenticated SMTP for standard clients but un-authenticated SMTP for web site email forms.  Some also use authenticated POP3 before SMTP where you have to read your email before you can send any.

Customer having intermittent email problems with current hosting co and Im thinking they are better off with another hosting co that offers authenticated SMTP as it seems superior for reliability.

Currently no email arrive to gmail or yahoo accounts.  No error message.

Are you talking about using a standard email client like Outlook or are you talking about sending email from a web page?
