mac mail problem

My mac mail has been downloading over and over again the same 308 email messages from our server for the last 3 days.  I was not in town and this happened.  I have deleted all the messages from the server side so I does not retreive them.  Now I have almost 300,000 emails in my inbox and I cannot delete them in bunches.  If I try more than 50 it will lock up.  I can do 1 at a time but I don't want to go insane.  Is there a way to delete these messages outside of mail?  Also, I have deleted the entire account in preferences which should delete the emails but when I create the email account again the 300,000 show up again. Must be a problem with mail reading some file on my computer or maybe my computer is crazy.  I have setup this same email account on another mac and there are no problems.

you can try deleting the mail folders in your library preferences.
~/Library/Preferences/Mail
~/Library/Preferences/Mail\ Downloads/
these are the containers for downloaded mail

~ represents the username or the home directory for the user.

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist holds the mail client settings.

If the problem persists try creating another user and setup the account in that user's newly created account.

Why can't I find this.  I am on mac os x 10.8.2

I am going to go - home - library - preferences

I don't see a mail folder after preferences

sorry I'm actually on 10.6.6  but I cannot find the info in the location stated in the previous comments.  Also, my mail program will not stop downloading the same emails over and over again.  This is a pop server email.

The Library is hidden on 10.6. You need to do the following. click on the finder and click on "Go" at the top and hold down the option button and the library will appear. click on the Library and delete the Mail and mail download folder that is there. also.. go to your Preference folder there as well and remove the com.apple.mail.plist
