AAA allows both a router and a switch to have a more granular approach to authentication, authorization, and accounting.

https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/docs/DOC-7905

Once AAA is configured it can be used for a variety of things, dot1x, RADIUS authentication, TACACS+, VPN authentication, even for a VoIP calling card set up.

It's just the underlying layer to a more complex authentication and authorization model.
