How do you custom render the button for ToolStripComboBox ?

I need to custom render the arrow on a ToolStripComboBox.  I have tried making a ToolStripProfessional Renderer but can't seem to figure out a way to make it work that way.  Either vb or C# is fine.

here's a post which describes the way to custom paint the arrow in ToolStripComboBox:
Painting right arrow in ToolStripComboBox

you can make the changes in the WndProc function in WM_PAINT message

Yes, I have seen that post and I was hoping there was some other simpler way that I haven't come across yet.
