I am not using any outside certs; Sharepiont has a built in cert for the Sharepiont Farm.

A newly built server will connect to the farm but the servers that were previously connected to the SharePoint Farm fail with th error mentioned above.

I found the root of the problem. It was Entrust Security Provider (ESP) OCSP 9.1 with cumulative patch 173196. Once I removed this security patch, the Front End servers connected without an issue.
