I just purchased an Asus Vivotab Smart tablet running windows 8.  I really like it as a second computer but would like to connect a USB or DVD drive to it.  It has a Micro-USB port used to charge the tablet.  I purchased a Micro to USB 2.0 Female adapter but neither the DVD nor USB flash drive is recognized.  ASUS technical support was useless.  Has anyone tried this yet?

Return it to the store for a refund within 30 days of purchase if you live in USA as it seems to me that Asus Vivotab Smart tablet is just like a combination of windows phone and table and the USB features you mentioned are absent.

OR

You need to purchase a USB OTG cable to connect your USB flash drive. I am not 100% sure for whether a USB OTG cable will work but there is no reason why not you give it a try as the cable is not expensive.

asterixwins said.."checked using a usb otg cable and was able to attach a usb portable hdd from ASUS VivoTab Smart with Full Win 8"

So, what you need is an USB OTG Cable. But, most of your USB devices will work except for external DVD drive that is powered from the USB port.

Just received my USB cable to fit the Tablet and a USB Flash Drive works.  However to use the external USB CD/DVD drive I had to attach the dive to an external USB hum that had power to it...But now it to works
