Adding microdata to a website

I have a couple of websites that I want to add microdata to in order to improve their seo.  I have been to a site that discusses this but I am not sure what to actually put into the itemscope.  The sites in question are www.gopherstateevents.com/ and www.cumulolearning.com/.    Any help would be much appreciated.

If you are trying to please Google then you probably should start with Google documentation

They have a large group of pages about how to do it right.
