want to view thunderbird emails without thunderbird client

is there a program I could use to view the .eml files as text (without using thunderbird client)

The problem is that you're not trying to view .eml files, but the actualy TB message database. Youdefinitely need a specialized program that can do it, and here's a free one that shoudl do the trick: www.mitec.cz/mailview.html

i downloaded and ran the .exe file

I think mailview is a mail client (like thunderbird)

I want to open my .eml files in textpad, or notepad, or microsoft word

No, That program isn't a nail client. It's a viewer fire the mail databases of several email clients, Thunderbird being one of them. That's the only way to view those messages without Thunderbird - they are not individual messages, they're all stored in a database, so they can't be opened individually without parsing that database
