Unable to add the 2nd Exchange 2010 server into DAG.

Hi,

I got two Exchange servers 2010 and able to created the DAG...the primary server was able to  add it to DAG.

But, the problem is when I tried to add he secondary Exchange server it keeps failing with the below error message:

The error message is:

SERVER

Failed

Error:

Mailbox server SERVER has the cluster service started, but is not currently a member of database

availability group 'EXCHDAG01'. If it was started manually on the Mailbox server, please disable the cluster

service and then run the command again.

Also, the 'cluster service" on Server wont' start up.

Appreciate any problem

Firstly you have to get the Cluster service up once done you should be able to work

DId you install the Cluster Role\Feature ?

- Rancy
the error is what it says that the cluster service is started on the node you are trying to add,

on the server you are trying to add go to services and check the cluster service if it is started stop it

@ Rancy, No. I didn't added the Cluster feature it was already installed when my client handed over the virtual machine with Windows 2008R2 Standard Edition. I then installed Exchange 2010 SP2.

@ Akhater, on Server the 'cluster service' has stopped and when i tried starting it i get the below error message. I restarted the SERVER but the cluster service still won't start. Exchange 2010 SP2 was originally installed on Windows 2008 R2 standard edition but DAG only runs on Windows Enterprise Edition so they upgraded it to Windows Enterprise Edition. Perhaps sometime during or after the upgrade for some reason the cluser service on SERVER (virtual machine) stopped and it won't start.

which one you upgraded ? the old one or the one you want to add?

upgrading an OS when exchange is already installed is not supported.

I hope this error is on the new node not your operational one.

It is obvious that there is a problem in the cluster role, remove it and try installing it agian
I got two Exchange servers:

Primary Server (Exchange 2010 SP2)
Secondary Server (Exchange 2010 SP2)

Exchange 2010 SP2 were installed from the above servers originally on Windows 2008R2 Standard Edition.

Few Weeks Later, since DAG will only work on Windows Enterprise version, these servers were  upgraded to Enterprise Windows 2008R2 edition while Exchange was installed.

DAG is currently configured and setup on Primary Server....Primary server is a member of the DAG...trying to add the Secondary server.

In EMC of Primary Server, adding the Secondary server as member on the DAG, keeps failing as reported above.

From the Secondary server, when I tried removing the 'cluster service' feature the error message stated below...something like..

..........you cannot uninstall the cluster feature because still have an active server and advised me to remove it first.

From Primary Server, I removed the setup of DAG...completely gone...went back to Secondary server and tried uninstalling the same error message that I cannot uninstall the cluster service because its still has an active server in the node even though the setup of DAG is already gone.

I'm baffled.
open command prompt as administrator on the first server and run

cluster node
OK, then??
what is the reply :D
Node           Node ID Status
-------------- ------- ---------------------
SERVER1            1 Up
From the secondary server...

C:\Windows\system32>cluster node
System error 1753 has occurred (0x000006d9).
There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.

Tried the solution here and it ain't working because the node in the secondary server isn't running or doesn't exist:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822050

Let me try forcing start of the cluster from secondary server.
if the server doesn't have any data don't you think it would be faster to just format it ?
I tried pinging the FQDN of DAGName from the Primary server and it does reply...BUT when i tried pinging FQDN DAGName on the secondary server has not response....it says request timeout. WHY is that?
is it resolving to an IP address?
From the Primary when pingging DAGName yes it resolved it to an IP address.

From Secondary server, when pinging DAGName it resolved it too..but no reply.

From Primary server when pinging the second ip address of DAG - it has two ip address but different network - it won't reply.
if your DAG has 2 IPs only one will be up at a time so it is normal that it own't reply but on one IP
Should the DAG first IP address pingable or reachable from your ENTIRE forest?
yes the online IP should be reachable from everywhere
how do you force the cluster manager to pick a spefic NIC (e.g., NIC#1)?

because at the moment, the DAG cluster is selecting the second NIC which doesn't not have the default gateway hence it cannot be reached from different subnet:

NIC#1
ip 172.16.1.30
sm  /16
dg 172.16.2.10

NIC#2
ip 172.16.1.35
sm /16

Thanks
after disabling the 2nd NIC including removing its IP address..this is now the error i'm getting....

can you now remove and reinstall cluster on the second node ?
