SBS 2003 Server becomes unresponsive at roughly the same time every month. We cannot connect remotely, there is nothing onscreen, we have to do a hard reset.
Hello Experts
We have a major issue where a client's server (SBS 2003) becomes unresponsive (can't connect remotely, no image onscreen) roughly at the same time on the same day each month. When this happens we are left with no alternative than to do a hard reset for the server to come back online.
We have thoroughly searched the application and system logs for an indication as to what is causing the problem but unfortunately there is nothing obvious. We have looked at the scheduled tasks and there isn't much to look at apart from SBS Monitoring Service doing a "collect data usage" on a daily basis (rather than a monthly basis).
We was wondering if there could be an application such as SharePoint or a SQL database (or anything for that matter) that could potentially have a monthly maintenance cycle that is not being logged in the event viewer. SharePoint is running and we can get onto companyweb although the client does not use SharePoint.
Other applications running on the server include:
- Symantec Backup Exec 11D for windows servers and
- ESET Mail Security 4.3
But that is about it! I'm trying to provide as much information as possible but I have no idea what is relevant. I'm completely at a loss with this and I'm praying that some kind genius will stumble onto this page and resolve the problem like a piece of cake. I would truly appreciate it!
Thanks,
Solpak.

Sorry for the delay lionelmm.
We have tested the RAM using BurnInTest and it has returned no errors. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

If its not hardware then the only other thing I an suggest, and what I found from my own experience with 2003 hanging/freezing, is to look for processes that are running and have them run at different times. In my case I had multiple instances of either xcopy and/or robocopy running across the network at the same time. I resolved it by making sure they did not run at the same time to the same system drive and/or external drive and that has reduced but not eliminated the issue. I still deal with it a couple times a month. Sorry I can't give any more definitive suggestions other than to verify and look for work the server is doing when this occurs.

Thank you for the above suggestions although none have definitively resolved the problem. The server has now been online for 52 days so hopefully the problem has resolved itself, although it is still a bit early to tell.

At first it looked like the server was hanging up at the same time every month but it seems to be at random now. We are still no closer to finding the cause of this issue but hopefully we will soon be replacing this server. Thanks anyway for the suggestions above.

Sorry for the delay in closing this question.
The server stopped completely hanging up at random before we could conclude exactly what was causing the problem. At least it's stopped!
Thanks for all the suggestions.

It's a HP ProLiant ML115 G1, 2003 Small Business Server. We do a full backup on a daily basis to a tape drive (Hewlett Packard DAT72 USB Drive). There are no incremental backups for this server. The only other connected device is an UPS. I have checked the log for this and have found no indication of any problems. They don't use a fax modem and there's just the one network adapter (HP NC320i PCIe Gigabit Server Adapter) and one display adapter (Matrox G2000e).
