You have several choices for compressing media for web presentation. First, you need to choose between compressing and presenting your media on your own site or using a service provider such as Wowza to present your content. Your selection will depend on your revenue stream, audience, and requirements. Choose carefully because your content is sizable.

Video Editing and Compression Software

As far as compression, you can compress with a variety of free to expensive tools. Expressions Encoder from Microsoft or the Adobe Creative Suite are great, but expensive, tools for this task.

Here are instructions to try out one of the free tools - virtualDub - free under the GPL license:

1. Download Virtualdub

http://download.cnet.com/VirtualDub/3000-2194_4-10184313.html

2. Expand and Scan Virtualdub

Use your favorite tools to expand the VirtualDub .zip file and virus scan the resulting files.

3. Install and Run Virtualdub

Run the auxsetup.exe file to run or install virtualdub. once installed, launch the program.

4. Open Video File

Click on File, Open in the menu structure and select your video file to convert. Instructions and help are available for options to work with video files.

5. Export Video File

Click on File, Export in the menu structure to begin exporting the results of your work.

Service Providers

If you select a service provider, you will pay something for the services they provide making video easy for you to provide and providing a better viewing experience for your audience. Providers range from Wowza to Akamai and many levels between. Here are a couple links:

Virtual lab doesn't open MP4 file. on the other
hand, Movie maker keeps jamming maybe
because the file size is massive?
A quick search found solutions for compressing or shrinking large MP4 files. I have no experience with compressing this format so I cannot guarantee the results:

Let me know if these grant success or I need to do additional research.
Have you thought of using AVS4YOU's AVS Video Editor 6.3. This software easily handles files of 1,8 gb and greater.

Import your video file to AVS Video Editor 6.3 then select the Produce function to get many output file size options.

Please allow me to reiterate: Have a look at this answer Compression to help you choose the best format (compression to quality) ration for tyour needs.
OK, i will give AVS Video Editor a try.
