SBS 2011 Moving Swap File to 'Second Partition'

I have a SBS with a RAID 1 array of C: drive of 250GB, and a separate RAID 1 array of E: drive of 550GB. This server has 18GB of RAM.

I would like to move the page file from the current C: drive to a dedicated partition, by shrinking 32GB from the current E: drive, making a partition S: and then moving the page/swap file to this partition.

Which follows loosely the SBS 2011 guide from MPECS; http://blog.mpecsinc.ca/2010/12/sbs-2011-setup-guide-v100.html, Steps 5 & 7.

The questions I have are;

If the swap file is moved to the S: drive which will essentially be the second partition on the 2nd array - is that likely to cause any issues - as it is the second partition - I have read that it is advisable for this to be the first partition on a new drive as it were.

Or is it a case that I simply move the swap file from the current C: location to the E: drive with the same parameters which exist already. What is the advantage of a separate distinct partition is the question I am asking here?

Thanks for your help as always.

It's safe to move the swap file to another partition. The only advantage is performance increase.

The only thing you need to consider after moving the file is to reboot the server.

ASKER

So really there's no advantage to creating a separate partition for this?

Thanks for the link - the article does explain why having a seperate partition is important - see

"My first preference would be to move the page file to a second physical drive. My second choice (as described in this article) would be to move the page file to a smaller dedicated partition on the same physical disk with no other files stored there. This prevents fragmentation of the page file"

So having another partition with no other files stored there means that it cannot get fragmented.

Thanks for the link I was wondering why it had to go on to another partition and that explains it. Excellent.
Glad that help you understand. Sometimes I'm not very elaborate in my explanations.
