The short answer to your question is yes but it may be the particular theme you're using, most themes will automatically generate a menu button when you create either a new Page or Category. <br />

I would suggest checking your theme's options to see if it specifies how those menu buttons are made since they can vary from theme to theme. <br />

I'm using Mantra Theme by CryOut Creations. I found it on the internet, so it's not a default theme.

That's the information I needed. I've created a custom menu and set it as the 'primary navigation'. It does override the default menu.<br />
<br />
I feel a bit stupid now, as it's real simple to accomplish ;-).....
