SQL Server 2008 R2 - No Instance Name
I am trying to upgrade from VMware 5.0 to VMware 5.1. The Single Sign On service requires a SQL Server Database but it has to be at root because you cannot reference a SQL Server Instance Name. Currently my vCenter Server where I am trying to update to 5.1 has the server name and instance name which is: VCENTER\VIM_SQLEXP
Can you install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express without an instance name so that the database is at root? If so how can that be done? I can always install SQL Server Express on a different server to host the SSO database but during the install its prompting for a instance name.

The only reason i prefer not to perform a fresh install is that my vCenter server is a physical server (and a new one at that) and I kind of prefer keeping it physical... on that note for an environment with 3 ESXi Hosts and 2 FC SAN's is there a benfit to keeping my ESXi host physical?
physical and virtual servers are both supported for vCenter Server.
virtual servers have greater benefits, backup, DR etc
if its physical easy to reinstall, just uninstall.
