Cannot open corrupted excel files
Hello Forum,
It's been 2 days I'm spending on this issue.
I have one excel file (2 years of work!) which is corrupted.
"excel found unreadable content in "file name .xlsx" do you want to recover the contents of the workbook?"
I did try all ressources available on the matter but no success. Basically, all result in the following ways :
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/10things/10-ways-to-recover-a-corrupted-excel-workbook/1002
I'm able to open it with notepad but with some funny (not that funny though) characters... Am I able to convert it?
Thanks a lot,

What version of Excel are you using? Have you tried opening it in a more current version (e.g., 2010)?
Is the file local or network? If network, try copying the file locally first, then try to open it.
Another thing to try is to open up a blank workbook, then attempt to perform a File > Open and Repair on the target workbook.

Hi, SIGMAEXPLOIT.
Can you post the file here? Please note that if the file contains sensitive data then that is not an option.
Thanks,
Brian.
jkpieterse,
Please see this link.

@mark
- I'm using excel 2003 and I also have 2007, don't matter whether it becomes xlsx :)
- File is local
- open and repair is no use :(
I'm in your care

I'm afraid it's not good. The vast majority of the two files simply consists of nulls. There appears to be a small amount of data in "conso Elec et Gaz.xls" and slightly more in the other.
If the file sizes are roughly correct then almost all of the original data is gone. Are you still interested in what little remains?
Finally, it's increasingly unusual for files to go that corrupt - and you've got two of them. Any idea how this happened?
Reards,
Brian.

@Brian : Of course, please i'm interested in any remaining data...
I thought the files could be recovered because their sizes still remained...
I was only able to recover the sheets names...
I'll give you back details on how it happened because it happened with a colleague
thanks for your time... Guru (I just noticed :))

SIGMAEXPLOIT,
Unlike the rest of the English-speaking world, in Experts Exchange, "Good" means..."Not Good". To quote from one of the Help pages...
An A grade should be given if you receive the solution from the Experts; you should consider the A grade the default unless it is deficient.
...and...
It is customary to explain any grade that is not an A.
Please do one of the following...
- If you genuinely feel that the answers were deficient then please explain why. (Please note that your data being irretrievably lost is not, in itself, a justification for a lower Grade.)
- If all the above was new to you (it is well concealed in the site) and you want to give us an A grade then please click on the Request Attention button above and ask for one of the Mod's to change the Grade. (He/she may simply "unclose" the question so you can do it yourself.)
- If you would like clarification/confirmation of what I've said then click on the Request Attention and ask for a Mod's assistance.
I'm sorry to be such a nuisance, but B's and C's are considered to be blots on an expert's record so it's important that they're only there for valid reasons.
Many Thanks,
Brian.

Hello
Indeed I am not familiar with the system. I thought I gave full mark
Given how quick both of you answered to my issue, it is natural I'm going to correct this mistake.
Sorry about that.
I did "request attention" ; i hope both can get A marks...
