asked on

server 2003 pending rebbot - how to identify teh process?

HI, some of our 2003 servers have been patched and are on a screen which says "updatying your computer is almost complete. You must restart your compuiter for teh updates to take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?

Here is teh thing, we have 700 servers and do not know which are in a pending restart. Is there anyway to identofy teh process running which is the message itself so that i can scan the servers to check to see which ones have teh running process and hence the reboot message?

Thanks

Also, i did a tasklist snapshot with the message and i clicked restart later and run the tasklist snapshot again but couldn't identify the process I assume becxause when you chose restart later it is hidden but the process is still runinng.

check for both the registry entries. You can create a script which will check both the entries and then reboot the system

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Win dowsUpdate\Auto Update\RebootRequired
and
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations
Hi, thanks for the response. The first reg key displays (1)  does this mean yes? and teh second key shows: \??\C:\Config.Msi\14d85e54.rbf

I'm not sure what that key means either, any ideas?
Ithink i have it. I checked a server which isn't pending a reboot and it doesn't have the reboot required key or the other key. So by virtue of it being there on teh first server means it needs the reboot  - that about right?
