Windows Media player won't play and DVD drive won't see cds
I have a brand new computer running Windows 7 Pro. All of a sudden when you go to play a song out of music folder it says that Media player could not play the music. Also at the same time if I put a cd or DVD in the DVD drive, it will not spin it up to autoplay and if you right click and choose autoplay it says you need to insert a disk and eventually the draw ejects.
Are these tied to Media player not working and how can I re-install media plyer without having to run a Win 7 repair, or a complete re-install. Is there anywhere I can download Media player 12? It is not available through Microsoft.com. Any ideas?

It is a desktop with 8Gb Ram and an I5 processor. I just built it for my customer less than 2 weeks ago. I am not sure about the Media Player but the DVD worked up until about yesterday. It is in an office setting and although there may be malware, I am not very positive that there is malware at this time.
The error message says that there is a problem reaqding the codec. It is also saying that it may not be able to read the format of the music. It says there is an issue with Windows Media Player.
There have been many applications pertinent to this type of office.
The computer runs quickly, even on the internet, that is why it doesn't act like malware, or so it seems.

Hey Budd,
You can try to download VLC Player and see if you are able to play it there .. if yes then its the Codecs that is been corrupted.. then you can use VLC or download Klite Codecs..
Regarding the DVD you can use a Microsoft Hot Fix that is available the link down below

Thanks..

The speakers work through "Sound" in Control Panel so does that mean that the codecs are good?
I tried the Regedit, but there were no upper or lower filters to delete
I ran the "Fix-It" tool but I have to go on location to see if that works.
Is there any way to repair only Windows media player without going back in time, or doing a full repair?

I ran the Media player fixit and now the error message I am receiving is "Windows Media Player C00D11B1". It says things I can try is to check to "Check status of sound device", also "possible issue with the MP3 header". There were not any issues with the music on the old computer running XP. The files were transferrred from the old computer to the new one. Now what?

When I try to play the song(s) the error message from Media Playrer is "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file"
If possible download mp3 from internet and try to play ...if it works then its file permission issue.
Take ownership of the folder that contains the mp3 files

Restart system and then try playing mp3....

I downloaded VLC and when I right click on the MP3 and say "Play with VLC media palyer", it still doesn't work. Through remote login I transferred one of the songs to my computer and Windpws 7 Media Player on my computer had the same issue. I am going to try to transfer the songs from the hard drive (from the original computer) to the new computer again. I had a similar issue with the "My Documents" on this same transfer of data. The documents would not open in Word, until I recopied them a second time.
By the way, the Microsoft "Fix-it" fixed the issue with the DVD/CD ROm drive, so obviously it had nothing to do with the Media Player issue.
