Problems deploying image with Windows Deployment Server
I am trying to setup a Windows Deployment Server on Server 2008 R2 fully patched and up to date.
I have successful
installed/ configured Deployment Server
Created my boot images and capture image
Syspreped a client and captured it's image
The image is Windows 7 and contains all hard ware drivers, MS Office, Kaspersky AV, Lotus Notes, and various other software
Now when I try to re-deploy the image I am having some issues. The image is deployed without any errors but when Windows starts it has the Setup is starting services screen and a message pops up saying
"Windows could not finish configuration of the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer."'
If I restart the the computer it loops through this again
I have had some success by booting into safe mode once, but this does not always work

I have tried with multiple computers and received the same result most every time. I did recently notice that while the computers are the same model number they are different part numbers with minor hard ware changes so I am thinking this may be part of the problem.

I had read about adding the drivers to MDT but I am just starting to test WDS and have not had much time to dig into it. How do I add the drivers?

What I did was download all of the drivers for my model from the Dell website, then extracted their contents (using 7-zip) so I was left with lots of .inf and .cab files. These are the drivers. Then in MDT, in the Out-of-box Drivers node, you create a new folder for a particular model, and import drivers. Point it to the root of the driver folder you extracted everything to, and it will go through all the .cab files and import the drivers. Then, when the OS is deployed, it will check the driver store from MDT and install them automatically.
There's a good explanation here:

and a great comparison of methods here:

Rob,
Thanks I will read through that and give it a try. My only question is I am not doing an OS install with WDS but I am deploying a pre-built image. Will this also check for drivers during the deployment or during the first startup?

As long as it's a WIM image and being deployed by WDS / MDT, I think it would still check the driver store during the "setup" phase (after the image is transferred).

Rob,
Sorry for the delay in responding to this I have been traveling for work so had a little difficulty testing this.
I was able to successfully inject the drivers for the HP EliteBook 8460p into the package and this solved the problem, I also injected the EliteBook 8470p drivers into another copy of the package and had no problem with this model either.
Thank you again for the help.

Great! It's great when things finally work with MDT! I just wish that it's error reporting was more accurate! All too often I've been seeing "generic failure" messages on my task sequences and have had to dig through the bdd.log to see what the cause *might* have been....But I'm nearly there with my LTI deployements, so I can see the end!! Phew!

If you know any good documentation resources for MDT and WDS that would be great.
After reading a little I have decided I want to deploy a thin image with the OS and then use scripts to install other applications that are needed so that I can upgrade applications without creating new images.
We had consultants from alteris come in and try to set this up for us, they worked for 2 months, charged us a bunch of money, and left us with nothing.

Hi, sorry for my delay in getting back to you on this.
I haven't got a huge amount of resources, I've sort of just googled for answers as my questions came up. Here's a very lengthy PDF I read through to get a good grounding of the capabilities:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12616
The Deployment Guys is a great resource too:

This thread offers some great customsettings.ini insight:

This is also a very indepth tutorial on what things are with MDT:

Not sure if that's the solution you were after, but since I had all of my apps configured for TS deployment, the reference rebuild was relatively easy.
