vCenter 5.1 server online and need to port over hosts from vCenter 5.0 server online

Hello EE,

We were able to bring up a vCenter 5.1 server and all other hosts, vms, etc still reside on our 5.0 server.  Is the next step to remove the host from the 5.0 and add it to the 5.1?

Do I need to add the datastores to 5.1 first?  What is the best practice way to do this and when I move the hosts they will not go offline correct?

I would shut them down and the vmotion them to the new host you can to svmotion that moves its datastore but to be safe I would do it out of hours and do it the first way shutdown then vmotion across to the v5.1 host.

Add all your datastores to 5.1, so ALL datastores are available on ALL Hosts (5.0 and 5.1).

and then remove 5.0 from vCenter 5.0, and add 5.0 hosts to vCenter 5.1.

So there is no issue with adding the datastore to 5.1 while they are on 5.0?
Excellent just wanted to confirm.  Then I will schedule to move the hosts.  Thank you so much!
No issues, all datastores will be multi datastores, and can be shared between hosts.
Ok I'm trying to add the datastore but have not migrated the host over yet so am I confused in the hosts need to move first and then the datastore or vice versa?
I can't add a datastore to 5.1 am I correct that there has to be a host moved over first?
Does the datastore move with it which it's connected?
you don't add the datastore, you just re-scan the hba, and it should appear, provided you have added permissions to the LUN
But you have to scan the HBA through the host so I'll need to migrate a host first.  Unless I'm mistaking?
datastore stays with the host - no change.
ok so since I have no Hosts on 5.1 I can't scan the datastore until I move a host over first?

awesome thanks.  Sorry for the confusion there was an add datastore so since we had consultant setup 5.0 thought had to add datastore manually.
