Mysql connection

Trying to log into mysql and get the following error.  Trying as user or root.  Yast says mysqld is running.

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

The socket may be somewhere else, you could configure /etc/my.cnf to point to the correct location, or use TCP/IP
ps -ef | grep -i mysql

lsof -p <PID of mysql server>
Look what socket/tcp port it is bound to.

Try mysql -h localhost -P 3306 -u root -p

If the MySQL server is on a different machine, you need to connect with a user that has permissions to use that connection.  MySQL users are defined by username, password, and connection.  http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/adding-users.html

The server is on the machine I am using.  Does the following tell us anything?

You are running mysql as a user, you need to point your mysql client to use the same config file /home/al/.local/share/my.cnf
Do which mysql to see whether the client you are using the one you built/install or is one from the installed system which uses a different config file.

I am not sure what happened because I have been using mysql on this machine for several months and all of a sudden this problem.  What is the procedure for getting things pointed in the right direction again?  Thanks arnold!

run lsof -p 3785 and see where it created the socket.
Where is your my.cnf file ~/my.cnf?

I noticed in the my.cnf file it points to:

/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

but that file does not exist.

Your mysqld server opens the socket in /home/al/.local/share/akonadi/socket-linux-6yw2/mysql.socket
Way do you start mysql as your user account versus enabling the server to run the daemon as mysql in /var/lib/mysql?
Ether modify the my.cnf and reference this socket or modify how your mysql starts/runs.

Which would  you suggest as the best alternative?  I installed mysql when I installed the operating system,  in Yast set it to run on boot, and it has been running with those defaults ever since.

Not sure what configuration options you choose for mysql. Modify /etc/my.cnf to ave the socket point to where it is now, or modify the startup process to use the socket in the location where my.cnf points to.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this.  I am not sure how to accomplish what you suggest in your last post.  If I read your posts correctly are you suggesting I change the following line in my.cnf file in the /etc directory?

socket          = /var/run/mysql/mysql.sock

to read:

socket          =/home/al/.local/share/akonadi/socket-linux-6yw2/mysql.socket

Below is the portion of the file where I see the "socket      =" line.  If the above is correct I don't know what to do to "modify the startup process."  Thanks arnold.

Not too familiar with suse, look at /etc/init.d/mysqld is likely has the settings or refers where the different parameters are loaded from.
Do you start mysql, or does it start when the system boots?
chkconfig --list |grep -i mysql

Yast might be the tool you need to use to manage the service
