Connect to XP pc from Windows 7 using RDC
I want to connect from my Windows 7 pc to my Windows XP pc using Remote Desktop Connection.
The Windows 7 pc is connected to a small business server 2003 domain. The XP pc is not connected to any domain. The workgroup name for the XP pc is "workgroup"
The ip address of the Windows 7 pc is 192.168.0.22 The ip address of the XP pc is 192.168.0.25.
When I run the Windows 7 Remote Desktop Connection I enter the ip address of the xp pc. The Windows 7 Remote Desktop Connection says it cannot find the XP pc.
When I attempt to ping 192.168.0.25 from my Windows 7 pc, it tells me it timed out.
What would you do to enable the Windows 7 pc to connect to the xp pc? I do not want to use LogMeIn because the free LogMeIn will not allow me to cut and paste information between the pc's

On the Windows 7 machine:
Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings
Turn on Network Discovery.

Don't forget that the windows XP must repeat must be XP Pro .. on the same network can you rdp directly using the ip address
As you said, when you try to ping it says timed out there could be some network issue. It could be either your network is not connected or you have different gateways on these two machines or it may be firewall or antivirus on windows XP which is blocking the communication.
Stupid question, but is RDP access enabled on the XP? Is the XP computer awake?

Hello Tejasbari
The XP pro pc gets its ip address using DHCP. Even though the XP pc is not part of the domain, it can get an ip address from the DHCP service. So, yes, the gateway is the same on the Windows 7 pc and xp pc.
Hello Pkokkinis:
Network discovery is on. I turned this on long ago because the Windows 7 pc is configured for a "work" network, not an exclusive Windows 7 network.
Hello Xlayer:
Remote Desktop Connection is enabled on the Windows xp pc. It says it will configure the firewall to allow Remote Desktop to connect. Please see attachment.
What are your thoughts about using the update mentioned in the following link?

you do have at least one user with a password that has been authorized using the select users?
That is a client update and the update has nothing to do with Windows XP.

Turn off your firewall. You said your XP is getting IP from DHCP, did you check IP configuration; Is the IP received is proper.

Thank you for the TeamView suggestion. TeamViewer has changed quite a bit since I last used it. It allows file transfers. The free LogMeIn does not.
This should work well.
I think there is no more use for RDC

Did you check the gateway of your windows XP.
The gateway should be same to communicate between 2 networks..
