Unable to add new printer or select existing printers Windows 7

I cannot add a printer or select an existing printer in Windows 7. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling print drivers several times with no success.

Windows 7 Home Premium
Computer  HP2710m 64bit 8GB
Printer  HP LaserJet Enterprise M602N

HP Installer stops during installation with an error message "A problem occurred while preparing to install software to your computer. Please restart your computer and run this installer again" - I've done that with no success.

I have the driver on CD but it will not install either - same error message as above.

Letting Windows discover the computer doesn't work either. Image attached in from Windows driver software installation error.

I hope someone can help. HP Support and Windows Support have been no help. Their only suggestion is to reinstall Windows. That's not an option. Too many critical programs that I would lose with a fresh install.

Also, I get a print error message when attempting to send anything to any printer.

"Before you can perform printer-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer. Do you want to install a printer now?"

Needless to say I've tried that. Each time I get another printer error "Windows can't open Add Printer. The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine."

When I look at services, it shows the print spooler service is running and restarting doesn't help.
Go to Devices and Printers and remove (uninstall) the LaserJet M602N. Now, still in Devices and Printers, click once on any printer and a new menu bar appears at the top. Click on Printer Server Properties and then click on the Drivers Tab. Locate the M602N drivers (there may be more than one). Delete the M602N drivers.

Now close out of all of that. Open an admin command prompt and run SFC /SCANNOW. Allow to complete and run again if errors remain uncorrected.  Restart the computer.

Now try installing the M602N from the CD agian. Be sure not to connect the M602N until you are told to.  See if that helps.

Tried that @Thinkpads_user. Still get an error trying to install the driver software from the CD... Never got through the process enough to plug in the USB cable.

"A problem occurred while preparing to install software to your computer. Please restart your computer and run this installer again"

I'm rapidly growing to hate that message.
I checked Windows Printer Updates on my own computer and the M602N is not there.

See if you can locate the setup program on the CD and then try to run it in Compatability Mode.

There is not much more to try at this point.

Yeah @thinkpads_user. I've been wrestling with this thing for over a week now. Microsoft and HP have both given up and I'm about to give up myself.

It started right after I paid Microsoft $300 for Office 2013 - without reading the EULA that said you could only install it one a specific computer. But Microsoft says there is no way that Office2013 could be the cause.

I'll try the compability mode and pray a little harder.

No luck with compatibility modes. Just a big old red "X", a problem occured while preparing to install software to your system. Please restart...blah,blah,blah.

I really think there are problems in the registry with permissions. I just haven't figured out what they are. I often get a "Office has stopped working..." or "whatever application has stopped working..."

Hummm...wonder if there might be a problem with windows 7 installer? I just tried to install snagit and it gives me a windows installer failure.

How would you fix a windows installer error (without having to reinstall windows)?
First, thank you on the printer issue. I did offer all my thoughts on this.

Second, I run SnagIt myself with no issues. If Installer were fixable, SFC would likely have fixed it.

So at this point, I would be inclined to make a new Windows User Profile. Make this user a member of the admin group. Log in as the new user and try installs, especially the printer and SnagIt.

If a new profile does not work, then you probably are looking at reinstalling Windows.

Well I gave up @thinkpads_user. I think during the process of following Microsoft's tech trying to help me and HP's tech folks, the registry got as confused as I was.

Sometimes I miss MSDOS and Radio Shack TRS-80 computers. No I don't-that was a lie.
