you mean download the sp 2 and 3 independently, and then try.
can i download a newer i.e. separately from the win update screen/function?
Yes. SP2 was a re-write of XP, so you should download it, install it and restart. It is a very large update.  Once all done, then you could try Windows Update and allow it to proceed. That should include SP3 but I am not sure in what order.

You can try updating directly from Windows Update, but starting from scratch, that will include SP2 and as I note, it is very large. So I you do it this way, there will likely be some restarts along the way.

@MarcHelfand  - I recall building my XP virtual machine (and long ago had rebuilt a few client machines). I downloaded and retained SP1, SP2 and SP3.  I installed the machine, updated SP1 and restarted, updated SP2 and restarted, updated SP3 and restarted and then patched it all. That process worked fine and the XP virtual machine continues to run. It sports IE8 and works very well.

yes, im familiar with updating xp with the sp2 and sp 3 and latest updates from either the 'windows update' in start menu, or the system tray when it states that windows has updates for me.
but as i mentioned, im using the windows update and just getting the error.
so im d/loading sp2 & sp3 and i.e. 8 now the IT admins versions from ms support /download area. and will try installing them one at a time... 60% downloaded now.

You can just go straight to SP3 as it contains all of the updated components from SP2 already.
THANKS THINKPAD!
id not thought to do the manual dload and installs.
@MarcHelfand - Thank you, and I was very happy to help. It is times like this my good old virtual machines come in handy. I have been running Windows 7 for a long while now.
