Remote Desktop Over A Homegroup

I have two computers.  ENGINEERING2 running Windows 7 Pro and HOME-HP running Windows 7 Ultimate.  Both are on the same homegroup and both can see each other and share files.  On ENGINEERING2, I normally connect to a work domain and I log into this computer locally using this domain.  This keeps my user profile and desktop the same when I am connected to work or when I am not.  I have a user configured on HOME-HP called home and it has administrator privileges.  ENGINEERING2 is connected via an ethernet cable to my wireless router and HOME-HP is connected via a wireless connection.

I would like to use Remote Desktop to log into HOME-HP from ENGINEERING2.  Both computers have Remote Desktop turned on and I have verified that Remote Desktop services are running.  The error I get is that Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer.  Both computers are active and I have monitors on each.

I am at a loss, so please help me.  I have searched the other questions in the forum and have not been able to find the answer.

Thanks,

ASKER

I have checked Windows firewall on HOME-HP and Remote Desktop is enabled for Home/Work networks.  I still cannot connect.
What error message do you get when trying to connect?
if I may suggest when you remote login use the workgroup\username syntax.   the engineering group because it is part of the domain logs into the second computer with the domai\ username.  need to do you use whatever is the workgroup name of the second computer

Schnellsolutions,

I set up the telnet connection on Home-HP and it was successful with no errors.  When I attempted to ping Home-HP from ENGINEERING2 the name of Home-HP was resolved to Home-HP.<domain name> and the ping was not successful.  So I looked up the IP address on Home-HP and used this in Remote Desktop for the connection.  This was successful.

So I guess that when attempting to connect from a computer that is signed in using a domain,  even when this computer is not connected to the domain network but still using the domain user account locally, you cannot use the remote computer name only because the local computer appends the domain name to the remote computer domain.  You have to use the IP address of the remote computer.  I must say that I did not expect this.  So I am calling this issue solved.

It would be nice - but not necessary - to be able to enter the remote computer name into Remote Desktop when the local computer is signed in using a user who is part of a domain, and hot have the local computer append the domain name.  If you know how to do this, it would be appreciated.  If not, then I can work this way anyway.

Thanks for your help.
For Home-HP computer, is the IP address static?
