Windows Server Backup Overwriting historic backups?
Hi we’ve recently learnt that Windows Server backup will overwrite old backups if the backup drive becomes full. Basically we just had a client want something restored from a couple of months ago but when we went to store on the Windows Server backup it only had like 10 backups available we was aware the drive was becoming full but thought as it self manages the drive it would only remove the last oldest backup not overwrite the last full along with all the incrementals which is what it's appeared to have done.
My question is does anyone know a way to either stop it from wiping off such a large amount of historic backups in one go? Or at least setup some sort of notification for the drive when it’s close to occurring so we can advise the customer to use a new backup drive etc?
Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

You can turn on disk drive quota's
Also we wrote some scripts to copy the back files from the default location to and off site drive
You can setup a weekly monthly etc. leaving the original backups in place you can have a copy saved else where.

Does anyone use any different kind of alternative backup solution on SBS servers? I thought Windows Server backup seemed the best and easiest as it includes System state i.e. bare metal restore etc.
Storage Craft is something that's good for disaster recovery but can get a bit pricey for the smaller businesses.
To be honest it was quite a shock when we couldn't restore from just 1 month ago because the drive had become full and historic backups had been overwritten with only a couple new ones available.
It's almost like once the drive becomes full if you want to keep historic backups you need to put that backup drive into storage and buy a new one.
If a disk quota can be setup on the backup drive before it gets to the stage of overwriting previous older backups I assume it can do email notification to alert you when the disk space is low using Task Scheduler or something like that?
