Citrix VDI vs. VMware VDI

Hi,

I wonder what's the difference and pro/cons for each of both solutions ?

I'm now considering to deploy VDI in my current environment where I already have server virtualization hypervisor with VMware ESX/ESXi.

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply guys, I'll try to sell this idea to my CIO to replace the old desktop in our DR suite with VDI solution so that we do not have to manually manage the patching and test the old HP desktop.

That's why I am asking in this forum, because:

Citrix technology is a time proven and specialized in this area, but we never implemented this technology before in te company.

VMWare is the leader in Virtualization, we have more than 20 ESX and ESXi hosts already with vSphere 4.1

Our shop is windows shop.

Can we deploy the solution hyper visor on VMware ESXi and then the virtualized Citrix Server as VM on top ?

Yes, VMware ESXi/vCenter Server can be used to deploy Citrix XenApp or XenDesktop.

That sounds cool and make sense because I'm more familiar with VMware technology and also willing to learn Citrix as well.

Hopefully the combined deployment solution is more cost effective and fully supported by both vendor.

Yes it is supported and well tested on all the mentioned hypervisors: XenServer, ESXi and Hyper-V!

ok, so in designing and implementing the VDI hypervisor server, in this case VMware ESXi which one should I put more emphasis:

vCPU socket / core
Memory
back end RAID 6 LUN with as many spindles or disk drive as possible.

the workstation will be typically just excel spreadsheet and general office usage in a banking company.

Thanks Hancock,
It seems that the most important component here is the Storage Array, I have VNX5500 with SAS FC SAN disk but no SSD.

I wonder what should we use the SSD for ?
In the automated storage tiering array, the SSD is used for highly active data like the swap file for hypervisor
