Windows 8 chkdsk stalls at 27%, why?

Hi!
I've tried running chkdsk /r from the command prompt on several Win8 machines and all of them seem to stop at 27%. I let one run for over 3 hours and finally gave up and turned it off. A google search shows this is common but I could not find an answer as to WHY. Any idea????
Another strange thing I notice is when I go to properties of the c drive, tools and run "error checking" it seems to be a very watered down version of error checking compared to Win 7. It literally took less than two minutes to scan my drive and tell me no errors were found. That's impossible to diagnose in less than two minutes.
My main questions are... One, why is chkdsk stalling at 27% and two, what's a good free alternative to do a good scan of the hard drive.

There is a manufacturer built in drive test. I ran it and it finished in about 3 minutes so I figured it was junk. After taking a closer look at it I realized that it finished so quick because it failed. Thanks for all the good info!
