Sysprep Windows 2008

Is it best to run sysprep before or after the server joins the domain?  After a sysprepped server is created, how can that image be used to create a template for creating vm's for VMware?  Currently we do not run vCenter, can templates be created without vCenter?

If you sysprep that removed Active Directory settings so I typically don't join domain unless you need to install application that you otherwise could not.
