a Question about SAN v NAS

I did a quick look see at previous questions about SANs, and see that everyong asking, pretty much has the same question, and the answers ...well not so much.  its a tough egg.

So, I thought about how I could ask and came up with this.

Does a 3 or 4 Virtual Server Environment REQUIRE a SAN, or would a NAS work  just fine?
(less then 40 users on at any given time)

Forget VDI for moment when answering.  Thanks for the help!

thanks, a final comment for anyone looking at this later.  its about cost.  we are a very small environment, we are virtualizing the servers because that makes sense.  The SAN solution appears to increase costs by a factor or 3 to 1.  I believe in our environment I will be better served replacing aging workstations and putting the money that I would have put into the SAN into faster, better servers as well.  thanks guys.
