Windows 7 Pro 64bit Update not working

have several lenovo, windows 7 Pro 64bit computers.  Replaced the hard drive in one and then used the restore discs to reinstall.  Once completed, the computer is up and running but Windows update will not function.  Have tried also using a windows 7 Pro 64bit disc and installing that way, get all the drivers working properly but the windows update will not work.  Tells me that it is not running but it is.  I have gone through and stopped the service and removed the SoftwareDistribution and then restart the windows update but still will not run.  Tells me that it is not running and I need to restart the computer. Suggestions/ assistance will be appreciated.

Hi MrGraves,
Thank you for the response, I tried that also but no luck.

The exact message reads: Windows update cannot currently check for updates because service is not running ( even though it is)
You may need to restart computer ( which does not resolve).

This is very strange, system is brand new install using both recovery media or brand new windows 7 disc.  This issue happened only once before and was able to resolve by deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Can you look into windowsupdate.log in your windows folder. Check what error do you get.
thanks X_layer,
I will do that as soon as I can get access to the computer again
There are many possible fixes.

Run the Windows Update Readiness tool:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=20858 for X64

Reinstall Windows Update Agent  (choose link according to the bit level of your Operating System)

http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.1.6001.65/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.1.6001.65/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe

Run SFC /SCANNOW from a Command Prompt

If nothing has helped
A Repair Install should not affect personal data or installed programs. but it never hurts to backup first.

It ended up needing to have an Intel driver installed.  Once I found that, everything was good to go.  Very bizarre
Hi,

I think I have exactly the same problem. I have a Thinkpad W700 that I upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit. Ever since, I've not been able to get Windows Update to function -- same issues, same attempts to resolve.

So how did you go about figuring out what Intel driver to install? Was it a CPU driver? Storage device driver?

Thanks,
Scott.
