win xp instalation
I am trying to reinstall win xp on a wiped drive in a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop. The reason for the reinstall is to rectify various running problems, this is after various virus, anti spyware, registry cleaners and advanced system care were run on the machine, without sorting the problems.
I turned out that the dvd drive was faulty (not seen by the bios), replaced dvd drive now recognized by the bios, this is where my problems started.
1. Ran gparted partiton manage (linux based) no problem, and wiped drive.
2. Tried to boot from win xp pro install disc, laptop wont boot from disc and tries to boot from the realtec fast Ethernet controller and fails (fair enough as it is not connected to internet).
3. Checked in bios, boot settings are CD/dvd, hard drive, Ethernet, removable drives, so should boot from dvd drive first.
4. Retried pressing f12 on start up and selected dvd first boot, still wont boot from install disc.
5. Copied win install disc to dvd disc, checked on desktop, disc install works fine. Tried in laptop same problem.
6. Tried one of my hard drive clone disks works fine.
7. Tried booting using usb removable dvd drive, wont boot (due to age of machine cant set usb to boot with bios).
8. Again due to very basic bios settings cant remove/disable fast ethernt controller from boot options.
The problem seems to be caused by the dvd drive not booting the win xp disc, tried cleaning lens & disc. I know the disc is ok (tried on another machine).
What I don't understand is why it will boot from the gparted disc and the clone disc and not the win xp disc. I an starting to wonder if its a mobo or hard drive problem? Any one come across this before.?

"... I am going to try a different hard drive today ..." ==> I doubt a different hard drive will matter. If possible, try a different DVD drive ... or another freshly burned copy of the CD. A properly functioning XP CD should boot even with NO hard drive (the installer would, of course, then give you a "no hard drive found" message => this is actually fairly common if you have a SATA hard drive but no drivers).

Accepted my solution as it solved problem, however it was due to garycase's comments and help that pointed me in the right direction. (which is why I have awarded him the points). To reiterate lessons learnt "don't trust parts that bought under warranty and are supposed to have been tested". Also I did know that an optical drive could fail in the way mine did ie; would load some discs but not others, unfortunate I assumed that if a drive failed it just would not work - if i had realized earlier I could have saved myself a lot of work.

1.I actually booted from the disc.
2.The disc is a burned cd, which i have used loads of times without any problems (its a corporate copy).
3. The weird thing is that it will boot to some discs but not others, all the ones I used to check with are bootable discs which work fine on my desktop (ie boot it up).
4. press any key message dosen,t appear. It just go straight to the fast ethernet boot up,as if the disc is not present.
I am going to try a different hard drive today. I will post the result
