Exchange 2007 Volume Fragmentation

Hello ,

Today we receive a message from SCOM that some of our volumes with the databases inside of our Exchange 2007 SCC installation has high fragmentation level. These volumes are iSCSI volumes on a SAN.

I check in the mailbox server in the Disk Defragmenter and indeed these volumes are 97% fragmented.

What will happen if the fragmentation level reach 100% ?

Can i start the defragmentation when the system is online ?

Thanks

Nopes please do not do anything during production hours .... and take backups before you do anything

Hello Rancy ,

So , after reading this blog post http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2004/10/25/247342.aspx from the exchange team i am unsure what to do .

At their article they conclude that " The bottom line really is - you do not HAVE to file-level defrag the Exchange database drives.

You also said that if drive reaches 100% fragmentation i will have problems with the performance and it could affect users.

I am a little bit confused ;)

Thanks a lot for your help
I was more of a concern with VM fragmentation and NPP as they too come around the same time so check for them once and if they are good Exchange is fine

Thanks for the answer 172pilotSteve and Rancy,

As you said i will do only the reclamation of the file share as i have deleted a large number of emails from a customer.

Thanks again.
