Lost work on a Mac

My wife has a Mac and recently updated a huge spread sheet. After she finished updating the spread sheet she saved it over the old version and then turned her computer off..yikes, she realized she had not saved the original.

She needs the original badly but we don't know if there is a way to go back in time to get it...ok, we messed up because we did not have Time Machine turned on and obviously should have...regrets.

Is there anyway to retrieve her original spread sheet?

If you decide to try Data Rescue or Disk Drill, make sure you recover to an external or a thumb drive to avoid further overwriting.

Was Time Machine set up do do automatic backups?

Martin, that was the valuable lesson we learned as it was NOT set up. We wish Apple had instructed us as novices to set it up...but nope. Now we find ourselves trying to do exactly what Time Machine was meant to do...
