asked on

ip default-gateway and default static route

Is there a difference between ip default-gateway and default static route (ip route 0.0.0.0) from the Catalyst switches perspective?

I know that from the Cisco routers, there is a difference.

Thanks

So if you use default-gateway on the router, you will not get the same result as if you use ip route 0.0.0.0. Correct?

I am using GNS3 to simulate my layer 3 switching network. I use Fastethernet module on the routers and default gateway. Well... It did not work like I expected. I should have use ip route 0.0.0.0 instead of default gateway so that all devices on the network can ping each other.
But I understand your point, default gateway for layer 2 and ip route 0.0.0.0 for layer 3
