Video Settings adjustments on Windows Media Player 12 have no effect.

Dear experts,
I have an identical problem with the similar device (Sony Vaio F-Series (VPCF236FM) Intel Core i7-2670QM @ 2.20GHz, 8GB RAM) running WIN 7 HP (64-bit), with different Graphics adapter NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M.
I've tried every option offered on this thread ( https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/27854925/Problem-with-Video-Settings-in-Windows-Media-Player-12.html )
with no effect on my Windows Media Player Video Settings problem. Changing settings in NVIDIA Control Panel will not solve problem either. The interesting thing is that every time I reinstall the driver through Device Manager - Driver Properties, it will (for some unexplainable reason) fix the problem and it will work for some time until laptop goes into sleep mode or gets restarted. And then again the Video Settings (Brightness, Contrast, Hue etc.) will not work. Sometimes adjusting setting on NVIDIA control panel will have effect on a video (wmv) while playing simultaneously on Windows Media Player, but again only until the moment when I have to turn it off or it goes to sleep mode...
I really hope you can help.

Hi  OhioTim
This is the key>>and it will work for some time until laptop goes into sleep mode or gets restarted.
This is also a key for me>
Could you explain what you mean by this>>with different Graphics adapter NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. << as in you added a different graphics chip to your laptop?

And then again the Video Settings (Brightness, Contrast, Hue etc.) will not work.
If you have changed the video card have you turned off the onboard?

What display aspect ratio are you using, as it sounds as if your using a display screen size that your laptop monitor doesn't like, so whenever it is restarted or closed off ( sleep mode) it returns to recommended or default.
Or the onboard chip is restoring the default.

When there is problems with colour/dark screen or odd pictures in WMP most often it is down to codecs, do you have any codecs installed such as the k-lite?
http://codecguide.com/klcp_64bit.htm

look also to how old the drivers are for nvidia.
they should be at least 2012
Update from Nvidia site only
what I do is use the Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products.

How to Use Playback Enhancements in Windows Media Player 12
http://www.7tutorials.com/how-use-playback-enhancements-windows-media-player-12

FYI
I also have Nvidia with windows 7 but a desktop.
Note in yours and mine nvidia control panel adjust video is set to use (with video player settings) so set them in WMP
User generated image
And finally if it is just a codec problem try first testing if your missing codecs,
if the WMV is a high definition?
 install Gspot  ( codec analyser)
and drop your WMV onto Gspot post back a screen grab of the results, WMV is a propriety codec.
A green line is you have no problems a red line is codec missing to play.
ffdshow is the main one and you can get in VLC media player
Does this WMV play ok in VLC?
I don't see any colour problem in screen shot with the gulls?

Hi Merete,

Thanks for you response.

I meant "different Graphics adapter" in relation to the thread I've provided further in my question where the asker noted he had a Vaio laptop running Windows 7 64-bit but with an Intel Graphics Adapter... I apologize for the confusion.

I've been using system recommended display aspect ratio which is 1920 x 1080

And... as I used the second option you've suggested (Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products.) and updated the driver from the INVIDIA site it recommended the new driver update version 314.22 WHQL. The one I had was just 314.22

And so far so good! I am able to make adjustments on the video!

That's good to see, yes drivers is always the first place these.
Ok I ran a test using a WMV in WMP 12 as well
I opened WMP 12 went to View>now playing
drag and drop my WMV on and right clicked the screen
enhancements if it's not actually playing I cant adjust the colours hues etc if I play it I can adjust during play.
Looks as if it must be playing to adjust live
I don't use WMP I prefer VLC and media player classic home cinema
example
no adjustment during paused

Bad news...

As soon as I restarted my laptop, (here goes again) settings would not work on a Player...
I tested teh same clip after closing WMP 12 and restarted it dropped the same clip on and it had returned to all level,
So it may be on purpose, your using now playing ?
and playing the video?..
I believe it designed to be like this because all video differ,
these settings do not stick all the time only for that video,,
please try Gspot, lets see if it's a codec issue, this would fix permanently colour/brightness issues with playback.
Since the drivers did not.
post back a screen shot so I can see the codecs used

Here is the screen grab of the Gspot...
Gspot.jpg
Thank you..
Just to summarize, we have covered that these settings do not stick in WMP 12 natively, by default..
so we need to rule that one out, there is no problem with enhancements and settings.
But rather the playback is? TOO DARK?

When you play this WMV in WMP 12 are experiencing a darker image? bad colours?
How does it look in VLC?
You need a dedicated player that supports hidef video
Just to give you a picture your gspot with mine the codecs used differ,
Your WMV uses WVC1 and VC-1 Adv ( WMP11)<<<high def
mine is using WMV3 with WMP v9  (VC1 simple main)
VC-1 Technical Overview
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/howto/articles/vc1techoverview.aspx

I'm using WMP 12.
Are you using WMP 12? should be with windows 7,
running WIN 7 HP (64-bit)<< home premium Professional? which one please, different versions of Windows 7 have different media components.
If you have WMP 11 please upgrade to WMP 12 first

When I first installed windows 7 professional came with WMP 12, I also installed ffdshow and VLC and MCHC. With the Divx pro updated when applicable. QT alternative as I dont use Itunes.
Media player classic home cinema will play high def

what players support  VC-1, MPEG-4, H.264
http://www.digital-digest.com/software/category-98.html
I also have Power Director 10 with Cyberlink DVD player 10, and also Nero 7 ultimate.
This ensured all my video formats would play back fine in any media player.
Since I do a lot of video editing ffdshow is paramount.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffdshow
you will have to enable VC-1 in ffdshow's VfW
configuration.
In the list of codecs, select VC-1 and change 'disabled' to 'libavcodec'

The MPEG-2 components do not function in Windows 7 N or in Windows 7 KN.
These features are not included in Windows 7 Starter N or in Windows 7 Starter KN.

Merete,

Sorry, got caught up in a crazy week at work...

Ok...Will start answering questions...

No, the video tested ("Wildlife.wmv") is not too dark, it's just the fact that I can't use the video settings that's bothering me.

I do have the latest version of WMP (Ver.: 12.0.7601.17514) and run WIN 7 Home Premium (64-bit).

I've always used WMP for video playback on previous PC's I've owned, and have never had a single problem with it.

Honestly, I don't believe that it is in fact a "codec problem" as the settings do work for some time but don't stick as I mentioned earlier.
