asked on

master dc desktop icons missing & appeared on file & print & isa 2006 member server

hi, this is a nightmare!!!

after making some changes or bad decisions on my network it appears i have now caused some problem:

- all machines logon to domain successfully

master dc

- when i logon to my master dc all my desktop icons ie: ad, gpmc, dns, dhcp have dissappeared. i cannot now locate my gpmc in list at all!!!

file & print member server

- when i logon to my file & printer server all my master domain icons have now appeared here!!!

isa 2006

- when i logon to my isa 2006 i can now see all my master domain icons have now appeared on this desktop!!

- also my isa feature has also dissappeard from the list!

- if i logon locally my isa feature reappears as normal with none of my master dc desktop icons.

attempted isa resolution path:

- so far i have just removed the isa server from the domain and logged on locally and left it this way for the time being!!!

qns2.  can anyone tell me why my master domain desktop icons have appeared as described above and can this be resolved ?

although i resolved my main question, i was not able to get internet access back to my xp desktop, even though the 'proxy' details were detected in the temporary 'default domain policy' & even though i had re-installed over the top of my isa 2006.

so i have now removed all machines from the 'master dc' and re-installed clean, and now joining the 'isa' back to the domain and others so i can hopefully get the internet access back!!

i think i just screwed up all the configurations and it maybe i needed to leave the system to updating in its own time the screwed up mess i made!!

even though those configurations came back via 'shadow copies' which i used, why they did not open directly when i double clicked and instead prompted a 2nd windows like the path link had broken, but when i clicked to say ok, it opened as usual.  the thing everytime opened and closed this, i had to do the same thing like the path link was not fixed with this shortcut on my desktop!!!

i have now resolved all my intial problems and as i mentioned earlier the main question in this thread.

unfortunately i never got an answer regarding, although i retrieved my desktop icons onto my 'master dc', the icons when double clicked did not open directly as another window was prompted for me to click ok & then it opened.  so there is obviously a broken link somewhere and wanted to know could this be resolved !!

so i may as well close this thread without allocating the points!
Could you tell us what the window says or looks like? What does it say in the properties of the shortcut, are the filename paths correct and the security permissions ok?

hi cmsxpjh,

apologies i did not take a screenshot of that 'window', but it was basically a repeat window just asking to i suppose clarify that i had the correct thing i wished to open.  so i click either 'ok or open' as cannot remember & it then just opened directly into my 'aduc' or 'gpmc', ie whatever i clicked on my desktop.

i have since done a clean install due to something else anyway.!!

i will allocate those points as it is one of the responses i should check due to my actual question wording!!!

appreciated
