Extranet for clients - SQL/Mysql

Hi experts

Currently we are running a case management system in our law firm. It's running on a SQL server (Microsoft SQL Standard Edition 2008)

I would like to create an extranet for customers, enabling them to view some of the case information we have in our system.

Is that possible, and if it, what is the safest way to setup an extranet.

I was thinking of two ways:

1. The website can access our SQL directly
2. Our server pushes the relevant data to the website, running MySQL. I don't know if that is possible. In that way there should be no access from the website to the server, only the other way around.

Hope some of you can give me a hint,

Thx.

Thank you for a thorough answer.

I had the feeling, it wasn't a good idea to expose our SQL server to the net. Our information is confidential.

My conclusion is, that we have to incorporate some kind of software, that can push the information to the webserver.

Also the website should support feedback from the users, but I guess instead of letting the website push this feedback back to the SQL, the SQL have to pull it back.

Do you know if there this kind of software exists, or if we have to develop it.

Best regards

Thx for the reply and sorry for my delay.

The information I want to give access to is confidential, but in case of a succesful hacking attempt the information isn't that sensitive. However on my server we have more sensitive data, so the idea of letting our sql-server push and pull the data sounds as the best and most secure method.

Do you know of any kind of standard software developed to take care of the communication between sql and mysql?

The idea of a one-time password is great. It could be done via text messaging.

Thx, Again.
