Tethering an iPhone with a Windows 8 notebook
Hello!
My wife bought a new notebook under Windows 8. With the old one, I learned from users here how to make tethering with an iPhone and a Windows Vista Home Premium notebook. Now, I have the same problem with the new Windows 8 notebook.
When plugging the iPhone into the USB port, the system asks what to do with the phone. But tethering does not function. What should I do to make it function?
Thanks for your help!

not sure what version of ios you have but if your notebook has wifi then you can set up a personal hotspot on the iphone. Acts like a wifi access point. go to general and look for personal hotspot and set it up pretty simple. you can then browse for the device on the laptops wifi and connect that way
Hi Sae1962at,
I find the easiest way to tether your device is without any cords, especially if you are constantly traveling. On your iPhone just go to "Settings" / "Personal Hotspot" / then move the toggle button to on.
However, if you do not have a data plan that supports "hotspot", which is tethering, then it will not work.
Here is the current Data Plans for AT&T: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/data-plans.html
Here is the current Data Plans for Verizon: http://www.verizonwireless.com/wcms/consumer/explore/choosing-a-plan.html
I would suggest the 3GB and then go up if you find that you and your wife are exceeding the limit every month. My wife and I personally share the old 6GB because I work on the run, and it allows for her to be worry free when streaming Pandora, surfing the net, or downloading new teaching apps.
Hope this helps.

I have a lenovo G585 that has WIFI access. I am activating the hotspot as you wrote, but I have to connect the iPhone over USB, as the notebook does currently not have a Bluetooth connection.
What I need is an entry of the iPhone (with some name) so that I can connect to the iPhone Internet.
The reason for tethering is that the Lenovo interrupts the Internet access over the WLAN, showing the connection as local. We still do not know why, but this is the case. It may be a hardware problem, but it started only three days ago.
By the way: I live in central Europe and my wife has a flatrate without Internet volume restrictions. Costs only 7.5€/month. We also have a flatrate from the cable, but the other two notebooks do not have any connection problems with the WLAN router.

Hi sae1962at,
Sorry for the late response. The hotspot, once you have a data plan and it turned on in the iPhone, takes over automatically when hooked up via USB or Bluetooth. That said, since your pc can connect via wifi you will still be able to go cord free. Perform the instructions above to turn on the hotspot, and then go to your wifi settings where you look for existing and new wifi connections, and wait for your iPhone hotspot to show up in the list. If you are not sure what your iPhone hotspot will be called, then please go to Settings/General/About/Nam e and either rename your phone or keep the current one, but that will be the name that shows up as a wifi hotspot.
Hope this helps.

That's the only problem that remains with the lenovo: The iPhone does not appear in the hotspot list. I can see our WLAN net, and others from the flats around in the housing complex, but the iPhone is missing.
Hi sae1962at,
This might be a hardware problem with your 1X1BGN card that your lenovo G585 has, but let's eliminate a few things first.
Making sure that interference isn't the problem:
Jump on your wireless router and make sure that the 2.4GHz band is on channel 1 or 11 and that auto is off. Next, if your router has dual band I would push all devices over to the 5GHz just to isolate things. Of course your microwave, cordless phone (if you have one) or if your neighbor has one, can impact your 2.4 signal, but know that walls, windows and such can make "attenuation" (the degradation of the signal) worse. Placement of your wireless router is of importance to get the best signal at whatever distance you require. To get the desired effect your router should be centrally located and at the highest spot in your house, since the signal descends like a bullet as it travels distance.
After all devices have been pushed to your 5GHz band or turned off for the time being, turn your iPhone on and make certain that your wifi, Bluetooth, and hotspot toggles are switched on. Side note: I would use a password to protect your hotspot, even when testing things to keep others off of your phone. Now, try connecting your Lenovo to your iPhone. If the iPhone isn't showing up in your wifi, try hooking the USB cord and see if it will connect that way.
If you are still having problems you can run through Apples troubleshooting steps to eliminate the iPhone as the problem. Here are the steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2756
If you are still having problems it could be the driver for your wireless card. Here is the latest driver that Lenovo has: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT074069
If you are still having problems then it is most likely a hardware issue on your Lenovo, so you are going to need your specs. Here they are: http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/tech-specs/laptop/essential/g-series/g585/
According to a few blogs that I read on your wireless card it is rather slow, so a lot of people upgraded to the 6300 card. Here is one such forum: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Performance-of-ThinkPad-1x1-b-g-n/td-p/823075
Hope this helps.

Where can I see the channel information? It seems not to be visible in the tab "ADVANCED" neither under "Setup" or "Administration", nor under "Advanced Setup". Tried to access information over www.routerlogin.com.
The placement is now fine, and my wife is sitting in the same room. No more signal strength problems...

Hi sae1962at,
Long time no see friend. Well, beyond the basic wireless properties that Win 8 will show you, you can open up your terminal and type in netsh wlan show all once you type this in it will show you everything including your channel.
Hope this helps.

Here is the result of the netsh... Yes, a long time passed, since this is the notebook of my wife, who is most of the day online.

Hi sae1962at,
Okay, we have established that it isn't a hardware issue and from your "netsh" file, it looks like you and 2 of your neighbors are using Channel 11, which is nothing to worry about. Great to hear that your signal is better and that there are no problems.
So, I would recommend that on your Windows 8 machine go back to the start screen and on the right hand side go to "selected devices". Then, go to the bottom of the page and make sure that the option for "metering" is on. Now, try plugging your iPhone into your Lenovo and see if it is recognized for tethering. You will see a blue glowing bar at the top of your iPhone if it is connected.
To make sure that your Lenovo is surfing the Net via the data on your iPhone, turn off the wifi on your Lenovo. Now, try surfing the Internet to see if your truly tethered.

I twice went on the "Start" screen and switched on the "System Apps on" switch. But I cannot find any "selected devices". On the "desktop start" view, I could also not find such an option.
But there is some good news also. I could the first time see the files of the iPhone connected over Bluetooth to the lenovo notebook. Unfortunately, although the hotspot personel hotspot is on at the iPhone, it still does not appear on the hotspot list of the notebook.

Hi sae1962at,
Please watch this video and the steps that he uses to match and make sure that you are using these steps: http://www.tinkertry.com/wifi-personal-hotspot-or-usb-tether-your-iphone/
He shows you both the wifi and usb way of connecting to a Win 8 system via iPhone.
If you still have problems it is most likely the Win 8 system causing it and not a the iPhone, so I will recruit a Windows 8 Guru to assist us. =)
I hope this helps.

Just out of curiousity, do you have itunes installed on the laptop?

Hello!
First of all, thank you very much for your support and that you did not lose temper!
Santasi24, currently, there is no iTunes installed on the notebook.
MacGuy47, thank you for your patient help. I followed the video and saw that some screens diverge from what is shown over there. For instance, although the iPhone is connected to the WiFi (or better, WLAN), the hotspot dialogue does not shows the WiFi option, and the notebook does not see the iPhone, which is as expected (see images 01b, 04 & 06 below). But that is not my real problem, as I would accept any type of connection.
As you can see in the pictures below, the iPhone is connected over USB. I hear the sound signal when connecting it and can browse the data of the iPhone over the Windows explorer. But there is no other display or message showing that there exists an iPhone connection over USB.

The notebook is because of WLAN disconnection problems to Lenovo. Expected time is around three weeks. So, I will be able to follow this issue in the second half of July.

THANK YOU! IT WORKS after the iTunes installation! So, the crucial answer above is to install iTunes. I say that Santasi24 deserves the points. What is your point? (I am asking to avoid a discussion about the points I gave, as it was the case in the last closed question.)
