Sharepoint Foundation 2013 cannot connect to database master
Having trouble with the SharePoint 2013 Configuration wizard when trying to specify the configuration database settings.
"Cannot connect to database master at SQL Server at <servername>. The database might not exist, or the current user does not have permission to connect to it."
Environment is Windows Server 2008R2
SQL ServerExpress 2012 database server
SharePoint Foundation 2013 loaded on a separate server
from other posts I've applied the following:
All firewalls are disabled
TCP and Named pipes protocols are enabled on the SQLExpress Network configuration as is remote access.
Account being used is a domain admin, is loaded to SQL Server and has dbcreator and securityadmin roles to master db.
any help appreciated!

I worked out the answer myself.
The problem I had was resolved by logging on to the Web Server with the account details specified in the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard - Specify Configuration Database Settings form.

can you confirm that your SQL installation is not a named instance?
