Cannot conenct to the virtual disc service - Server 2008 R2

I need to add some extra SAN storage to one of my physcial 2008 R2 boxes however when I open the storage manager on the server itself I receive the message

"Cannot connect to the virtual disk service".

when I check the associated service on the server it is not running and when I start that service it stops when I try to open the Storage manager.

Andy ideas?

The storage allocated for this server is on a SAN.
