How to include authentication into a TCP/UDP file transfer program?

Hi! I was looking for a program to send files using TCP and UDP either in Java, C or Python. There are a lot of programs around the internet, but I was wondering how we could make it such that the client goes through an authentication phase using SSL or any of the authentication techniques with password encryption included. Can anyone please help?

Thank you for the prompt reply! :) Is there any other way of doing it, say, more obviously? Like the user enters his username and password and the server authenticates and allows for communication?

I know that that is the way, but are there any best practices to do this? Or some way to store the credentials on the server?
